2018 Joyce Estate Pinot Noir, Carmel Valley

The most gripping, almost Pommard like Pinot in the lineup is the Joyce Estate Vineyard from the home vines in the heart of Carmel Valley just 12 miles east of the Pacific Ocean, with its warm days and cool nights makes for a firm wine that always feels more Burgundian, as noted, than Californian with more subtle fruit, earthiness and a feeling of solid structural tannin. This vintage is vividly fresh and a bit more polished, it has chewy fruit density and shows well defined flavors and details, plus a long finish. This 2018 is dark in color and in character with an array dusty spices with a burst of acidity that makes the mouth water. The palate feels full and includes racy currant, cherry and fleshy plum fruits as well as some rustic elements, herbs de Provence and red apple skins. This deep garnet wine is a crunchy minerally young Pinot that slowly reveals itself, but develops nicely with air.
